Yes, I rode to work today.

Today was a record breaking day. We set a new high temperature mark. Heather told me the old record was 91F/32C. Today it got up to 93F/34C and it was 92F/33C when I left work.

The temperature record wasn't the only thing to break today.

This was the sight that greeted me as I approached the employee entrance at the Courthouse. Apparently a water main had been leaking for sometime and finally broke. The pavement was buckled. It wasn't pretty.

When I went out at lunch the sight of a big hole welcomed me. Obviously, they must have expected something like this might happen. Good thing they had closed the area off. The parking place is a reserved spot. If the employee had been parked there when it caved in I suspect it wouldn't have seemed liked such a great perk. I'm not sure I would have chosen as this young woman did to walk inside the pylons. That's too close to living on the edge for me.

After I got home I went over to Willmore Park and land paddled. I've gotten away from doing this and really want to do more of it. I forgot how much I enjoy it. (click here to learn more about land paddling)
  • 60F/16C and clear for the ride to work.
  • 92F/33C and if there were any clouds in the sky as I rode home I didn't see them.

  1. Land paddling looks like great fun, but I wouldn't want one of those coming at me on a bike path. Where is the safest place to do this? You can't have bikes, runners and walkers and paddling all on one path.

    1. We are very sedate paddlers. Congestion is the problem. We like to go over to Madison County, Illinois and paddle on their rails to trails network. Nice and flat, not as spicy as some of the stuff others do. I paddle in Willmore Park. It isn't crowded and is mostly a pedestrian park. They don't seem intimidated by me at all. I think it has to do with speed and courtesy.

Some folks here use it as a means of transportation and use the streets and sidewalks, just like a skateboard.

It is great fun. It is much like punting.

  2. Wow, you guys had a little heat wave yesterday. I am glad you could get out and enjoy it after work.

That is quite the little sink hole from that water line break.

    1. They worked on it for a while today and then put boards over it and went away. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

  3. Very cool Keith. Now we need to see your land paddling talents in action. Time to buy a GoPro if you haven't already. Word is there may be great prices at Costco in the US.

    1. David,
I'm afraid I put the boring in land paddling. You won't find me craving any hills. For me it is nice easy play.

You know, I've never been in a Costco. Go figure.
