Interesting Choices

Yes, I rode to work today.

And . . .

It was another beautiful day for riding.

I often see cyclists on my way to and from work. It was seeing them commuting which gave me the idea to get a little scooter. Since my knees don't like cycling it seemed to make sense. Fortunately, me being a head injury survivor neither occurred to me, nor has it presented a problem with the unfolding of one of the most satisfying things I have ever done in my life.

My eighty-five year old father bought a bicycle a few weeks back. I wouldn't want to venture a guess how long it had been since he'd even been on one. He has a bum big toe on one foot and can't walk for distance anymore. He rode a bicycle a lot as a young man, but then got a car. Now he's riding again. He was surprised at how easy bikes pedal now. He has ridden sixteen miles a couple of times. Seems like he made a good choice, a choice many would've have doubted the wisdom of. I guess we come from the same tree.

  • 50F/10C and blue sky for the ride to work.
  • 75F/24C with a few clouds for the ride home.

  1. Good for your Dad! What a great guy taking on a bicycle at that age.

I enjoyed both photos here. I like the blurry one best. It's good that way.

    1. Martha,
My Dad is one of those individuals who has squeezed every ounce of enjoyment from life. He is a remarkable man. I found it funny that another reason he got the bike was he was having some balance issues and "thought riding a bike might help." As my sister says, "We can't wrap him in bubble wrap."

  2. Hi Keith,
I too like the blurry picture .....it kinda puts the cyclist in a more tranquil time and space.
    Eighty-five and on a bike , now that's fantastic !
    Take care Keith

    1. Len,
I think there is something special about the light in the "blurry" photo. Perhaps it gives it a slight Impressionist feel.

      I glad you liked it.

  3. Good on your dad for getting a bike at his age. The exercise will keep him young. Our course hearing of his longer bike rides really makes me feel lazy.

    1. He does like being active. He's been a worker all his life. He's still working and his job takes him all over Michigan. He was retired for a while, but said he had to go back to work because he was too busy volunteering for stuff and it was wearing him out.
