Only A Few

Yes, I rode to work today.

And, once again it didn't rain where I was. I heard it rained to the west of where I was. I even had a friend in St. Charles tell me it was hailing there. Alas, only a few raindrops fell on my head.

As I headed west after work I did see evidence of rain.

And, as I neared home I definitely felt the humidity spike when the sun came out . One could see steam rising from the street, the creation of the cool rain water resting on hot pavement. I couldn't catch the steam in the photo, but trust me, it was there.

Before the sun came out I was able to enjoy the experience of different temperature zones. As I rode the temperature would change drastically depending on where I was in relation to the rain. The temperature would be stable for a while and then a coolness would wash over my face, then it would go back to hot. And, there was the smell that follows a rain, delicious. I've heard it said motorcycle and scooter riders are the only ones who really understand why dogs stick their heads out car windows. Perhaps, it is so.

One had to be farther west of where I was and where I am to experience any significant rain. Where I was it rained just enough to make the painted lines and markers on the street slippery. Oh well.

  • 70F/21C and some clouds for the ride to work.
  • 81F/27C and overcast turning into sunny during the home ride.

  1. Nice post Keith. I think you're right about the smells. I used to drive a convertible, but I don't remember the smells of a summer day reaching me the way they do on two wheels.

    1. There is this incredible immediacy I experience when riding. It is even more so, now that I've removed the windscreen. Everything is right there and so am I.

  2. Keith, it takes a soul like yours to find positive in the rain, and you are absolutely right. The smell after a downpour is amazingly fresh and clean.

    1. The smell after a rain, the smoke from the fireplaces in early Autumn, and of freshly worked soil in the Spring are three of my favorite smells. Riding is indeed a cornucopia for the senses.
