Not Being Important

Yes, I rode to work today.

There are storms brewing in the West. I think it will be another stormy night in the Heartland. After work I rode through a light rain shower, but by the time I reached the condo the streets were dry. Shortly thereafter it poured.

Some of my co-workers were astounded that I rode. Apparently, there was much talk of bad storms coming in. Since it was cloudy this morning I guess many thought the storms were imminent. Then again, I'm learning there are more than a few folks who seem to delight in scaring themselves. For these, sprinkles mean monsoons and severe storms mean Armageddon.

Since I've been commuting I've learned here in the Midwest if I watch the radar and use my head, with the distances I'm traveling, I can wait and ride between storms. The key is not to be in a hurry. I'm glad I have a life seldom so important that I need be anywhere. Heck, even if I'm late for work it only means taking vacation time. Yes, there is much to be said for not being important.
  • 76F/24C and mostly cloudy for the ride to work.
  • 83F/28C with a little rain in the middle of the home ride.

  1. I agree. My GF always tend to be upset with me when I take the bike in with a 30% or above chance of rain. I know the dangers and try to mitigate them as much as possible. I won't ride if it's above 50%. It's not worth the risk.

Still though I understand her worry.

    1. It is good to be cautious. I work at being safe, at trying to "mitigate" the risk of riding in the rain. "Mitigate" what a great word. Thanks for using it in your comment. No matter what conditions I ride in that is the name of the game.

And, I too, understand her worry.

Be safe and thanks for commenting.

  2. This time of year I'm always looking and listening your way because that's where the really bad stuff comes from! Good to know you are OK tonight.

    1. Martha,
Yep, it tis the season for storms. Of course, they can happen anytime, but now is a prime time.

NOAA's map looks quite colorful again tonight and into the weekend. Ah, Spring.

  3. Never make yourself irreplaceable because then you can't take vacation. Isn't that the old saying?

Glad you managed to scoot between the storms. Hope today is a sunny day. Our rain stopped last night and we woke to nothing but blue sky - yeah.

    1. It was cloudy right up until time to ride home. I looked at the radar and didn't even wear the rain gear. It was a nice and muggy ride home.

Enjoy your blue skies. I hear it often rain out in your part of the world :^)
