Below Average Can Be A Good Thing

Yes, I rode to work today.

And . . .

The day started out gray.

And it pretty much stayed that way.

We are still experiencing mild temperatures than normal. The average high temperature for August is 88F/31C. Today the high was only 75F/24C and more importantly the sun remained hidden behind the clouds. The sun here can be brutal.

I remember when I moved to Oklahoma everyone warned this Yankee to be careful of the sun. I learned the wisdom of this. It was definitely more intense than the sun I grew up with in Michigan. Here it is nearly as intense. It is something to be wary of and to protect oneself from.  Today without the sun and with a breeze it was nearly chilly out.

There is lots of chance for rain this week. We'll see what comes.

  • 68F/20C and overcast for the ride to work.
  • 74F/23C and overcast for the home ride.

  1. I hate this wet lousy summer, lol It's been raining for the past two and a half months here in Philadelphia.

    1. Kofla,
My daughter lives in Norfolk. I've been hearing how wet is has been on the East Coast. Here we are wet, but not that wet. Last year it was devastating dry. It will be a while before I complain too much about rain.

      And, welcome. Thanks for commenting.

  2. I've heard about wet weather for much of the country's eastern half. Here in the middle we were almost getting dry (again).

I agree Keith, too much heat and bright sun can overwhelm. My thermometer clipped to the tankbag on Sunday morning registered 42 degrees; not what I've predicted for what may as well have been northern IL in early August.

    1. Coop,
It has been a very different year. A friend sent me a photo of the thermometer on her scooter this morning: 66F. Not what we expect in August for sure.

  3. Being outside most of the week I have to agree about the regional sunshine. I would be as dark as burned toast by now if I were back in CO. Did that, don't want to anymore. Here, I'm toasty, but not scary dark.

And since there's always a source of cold water nearby... :^ )

    1. Its in the cold months that the sun really surprises me. Here it can be in the twenties Fahrenheit and if there is sun the snow will be melting. Amazing.

I continue to be amazed by the riders who don't protect themselves from the sun. Oh well.

  4. I think riding on an overcast but warm day is usually more pleasurable than riding on a bright sunshiny day. Easier to see, no shadows to hide surprises and it isn't so hot.

    1. Brandy,
I agree completely! I love gray days for riding especially with some light patches of fog. It doesn't get much better than that in my book.
